Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Over time, elevated blood glucose can cause health problems. Diabetes is the nation’s seventh-leading cause of death, accounting for more than 79,000 deaths annually. It also contributes to deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke which are the leading and fifth-leading causes of death, respectively. In 2018, 34.2 million Americans, or 10.5% of the population, had diabetes.
